Photo gallery

The photo gallery shows a selection of contemporary portraits of Robert Schumann and a selection of images originating from the time after his death.

The following catalogue is to be used as the standard work for further study and to achieve an overview of the contemporary portraits, taking into account certain images that were created after Robert Schumann’s death using contemporary templates: Clara und Robert Schumann. Zeitgenössische Porträts. Catalogue accompanying the exhibition organized by the Heinrich-Heine-Institut, Düsseldorf and the Robert-Schumann-Haus, Zwickau, in cooperation with the Robert Schumann Society’s Research Center Düsseldorf, ed. by Bernhard R. Appel, Inge Hermstrüwer and Gerd Nauhaus with contributions from Ute Bär, Düsseldorf: Droste Verlag, 1994 (Publications by the Heinrich-Heine-Institut, Düsseldorf, Joseph A. Kruse). The catalogue can be purchased in the Heinreich-Heine-Institut, Düsseldorf, during opening hours or can be mail ordered.

„Nachleben“ deals with portraits of Schumann that were created after his death, which includes oil paintings, drawing and engravings that were based on contemporary templates, but which primarily draws attention to depictions of Schumann on post cards, which became the primary determinant of Schumann’s image in the public eye due to their extensive circulation. "Populäre Rezeption sucht den Zusammenhang zwischen Kunst und Leben herzustellen. Postkarten mit Abbildungen von Künstlern und ihrem Werk sind Medien dieser Vermittlung; die Bilder von Robert Schumann […] sind die Brücke zu einem vereinfachten Verstehen [...]. Der Meister wird zum 'Tondichter', dessen Schaffen man nicht als Arbeit, sondern als Produkt höherer Eingebungen vorstellt [...]" (Prof. Dr. Sabine Giesbrecht, University of Osnabrück, 2006). The overview also shows which images were used as post card motifs as well as whether post card producers drew on realistic portraits. (I.B.)
