The garden pavilion in oriental style, looking exotic and for this reason sometimeswrongly called “mosque”, bears its name due to the former dark-blue colour of the vault inside. The building owners were the Serre family who in 1848 commissioned the erection of the “kiosk” at the edge of a slope leading to the Müglitz stream, with the participation of their friend Raden Saleh, a native of Java, who revered them like his “second parents” and who, following his schooling as a painter in the Netherlands, worked in and around Dresden and was part of the artistic circle around the Serre family between 1839 and 1849.

The pavilion, which certainly was an excursion destination for the Schumann family in 1849, is nowadays under private ownership, including the surrounding plot, and has been lovingly and lavishly restored. The owners kindly offer public guided tours once a year on the “day of the open monument”, sometimes even on another day of the year, which can be found out about on the above web site.
